Untapped Cities: Inside the TWA Flight Center At New York's JFK Airport (PHOTOS)

Over the last decade, the now-closed TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport, designed by architect Eero Saarinen, has been undergoing painstaking preservation. The center is currently in the process of being approved for adaptive reuse as a hotel.

We got a look inside.

James Steven, manager of JFK Physical Plant and Redevelopment tells Untapped of the renovation he has overseen with Beyer Blinder Belle, and has been detail-oriented down to each tile being properly sourced in keeping with the building's history. The National Trust for Historic Preservation helped save it from demolition in 2003, and is now highlighting the terminal as one of the 24 most inspiring preservation stories in the 24 years of its 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List.

This was the cathedral to aviation, if there ever was one, and you feel through the design the pride and optimism the aviation industry had then.

How to bend it like Beckham: Physics students calculate perfect soccer ball kicking formula

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Now that David Beckham won't be appearing at the London 2012 Olympics, other members of Team GB wanting to brush up on their free-kicks can rest easy.

University of Leicester physics students have published a paper which sets out the optimum way of kicking a football (soccer ball) in order to make it bend into the goal.

The ex-England captain's curling free-kicks became legendary, and even inspired the title of the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham.

Now, four master's students at the University of Leicester's Department of Physics and Astronomy believe they have discovered a formula to explain how the football curves when a player puts spin on it.

Jasmine Sandhu, Amy Edgington, Matthew Grant and Naomi Rowe-Gurney found a relationship between the amount a football bends in the air, the speed it is travelling and the angular velocity -- or "spin" -- applied to the ball.

When a football spins in the air, it is subjected to a force called the Magnus force -- which causes it to curl sideways from the direction it was originally kicked.

The group found that the distance a ball bends (D) as a result of this force is related to the ball's radius (R), the density of air (?), the ball's angular velocity (?), it's velocity through the air (v), it's mass (m) and the distance travelled by the ball in the direction it was kicked (x).

For instance, if a player standing 15 metres away from the byline kicked an average football so that it was travelling at a velocity of 35 metres per second and had an angular velocity of 10 revolutions per second, the ball would bend around 5 metres towards the goal.

As a result, the player would probably need to bring a tape measure -- as well as a measure of their own abilities -- if they wanted to put the theory into practice during a game!

Jasmine Sandhu, 22, who studies Physics with Space Science and Technology, said: "Whilst researching new ideas for a paper I read about how physics influences various aspects of football, from the clothing they wear to the effects of playing at high altitude.

"The article discussed how a new design of ball, used in the 2010 World Cup, has three dimensional moulding of the panels in order to produce a more rounded ball, thus affecting the spin that can be imparted.

"This prompted us to examine how footballers use spin on the ball, and the factors which influence how much the path of the ball would bend.

"These findings made me more aware of how I can use spin to bend the ball in a game of football. In addition, this research is also relevant to other sports, such as tennis, which shows that physics definitely gives you the edge!"

The paper was published in this year's University of Leicester Journal of Special Physics Topics, which features original short papers written by students in the final year of their four-year Master of Physics degree.

Automotive assistance needed : News : MySouthwestGA.com

ALBANY, GA --
The 4th of July is upon us and that means many drivers will be hitting the road in vehicles that could need a tune-up.

No matter what holiday it is, Americans seem to end up on the roadways. Driving their?vehicles?hundreds of miles to enjoy a backyard barbeque with friends and family, or just cruising down to the lake for some rest and relaxation. However with triple digit temperatures expected through the next week, Southwest Georgia drivers should be having their cars serviced and checked.

"Checking your tire pressure, making sure that you don't have any leaks in your tires or anything like that. That can end up being a really bad situation should you have that problem. Basic check of the fluids, the engine oil, the coolant level in the radiator," said local mechanic?Tom Gieryic.

Many drivers are unaware of the spots that can be drastically affected by severe heat. Car batteries are on of those parts, which Gieryic says is one of the biggest problems he faces during the summer.

"Batteries are actually affected more by heat than from the cold. A lot of people don't realize it until their battery goes dead and their stranded on the side of the road. So getting a routine battery check before a long road trip is always a good idea," said?Gieryic.

Ultimately the best way to avoid being stranded on the side of the road is to give your car a basic check-up. Make sure every fluid is full, and the engine is running at top performance.

India Floods 2012: Raging Waters Swamp Thousands Of Indian Villages, Killing 27

GAUHATI, India -- Raging floodwaters fed by monsoon rains have inundated more than 2,000 villages in northeast India, killing at least 27 people and leaving hundreds of thousands more marooned Friday.

The Indian air force was delivering food packages to people huddled on patches of dry land along with cattle and wild elephants. Rescuers were being dropped by helicopter into affected areas to help the stranded.

About 1 million people have been forced to evacuate as the floods from the swollen Brahmaputra River ? one of Asia's largest ? swamped 2,084 villages across most of Assam state, officials said.

Officials have counted 27 people dead so far, but the toll is expected to be much higher as unconfirmed casualty reports mount.

Telephone lines were knocked out and some train services were canceled after their tracks were swamped by mud. As the floods soaked the Kaziranga game reserve east of Assam's capital of Gauhati, motorists reported seeing a one-horned rhino fleeing along a busy highway.

"We never thought the situation would turn this grim when the monsoon-fed rivers swelled a week ago," said Nilomoni Sen Deka, an Assam government minister.

Residents of Majuli ? an 800-square-kilometer (310-square-mile) island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River ? watched helplessly as the swirling, gray waters swallowed 50 villages and swept away their homes.

"We are left with only the clothes we are wearing," said 60-year-old Puniram Hazarika, one of about 75,000 island residents now camping in makeshift shelters of bamboo sticks and plastic tarps on top of a mud embankment.

A herd of 70 endangered Asiatic elephants, which usually avoid humans, were grouped together nearby, Majuli island wildlife official Atul Das said. "The jumbos have not caused any harm, but we are keeping a close watch," he said.

Al Armendariz, EPA Chief Ousted For "Crucifying" Energy Industry, Joins Sierra Club

When video surfaced earlier this year of EPA's regional administrator Al Armendariz comparing his strategy for regulating the oil and gas industry as the EPA's regional head to crucifixion, Republicans gladly accepted the former SMU professor's proffered head. Then, when they asked him to Washington to be pilloried in person, he had the audacity to stand them up in favor of the lefties at the Sierra Club.

We learned today that Armendariz might not have been giving Congress the finger so much as extending his hand to his future employer. The Sierra Club announced today that, come mid-July, Armendariz will join the environmental group as part of their Beyond Coal campaign.

Per the Sierra Club, "Dr. Armendariz will draw on his scientific expertise working on air, water, and climate science to help move Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas off coal-fired electricity and toward an economy powered by job-generating clean energy sources such as wind and the sun."

As expected, the press release makes no mention of crucifixion. That's a tool of government bureaucrats, and Armendariz is at the Sierra Club now. No, this is jihad.

Delaware Became 1st State In USA To Make Online Gambling Legal!!! Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012

Democratic Gov. Jack Markell signed the Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012 into law the morning after the bill passed the state Senate on a close vote?
that reflected opposition from lawmakers who believe expanding gambling to the digital realm will expand the social ills associated with it.
Proponents hailed the measure as a viable way to help preserve the state's embattled casino industry, which is facing aggressive competition from new venues in the neighboring states of
Maryland and Pennsylvania.

"We're talking about a couple thousand jobs," Markell said. "The competitive landscape for this industry has changed dramatically."
Online slot machine play and casino games such as blackjack and poker will be accessible through each Delaware casino's website and controlled centrally by the state Lottery Office.
Delaware lottery tickets also will be offered for sale on a state-run website.

Federal law limits?online gambling?to players within the state's borders, which will be verified using geolocation software.
The state hopes to launch online gambling in 2013 and intends to make betting available on a variety of digital devices including smart phones and tablets.
Other states already offer lottery ticket sales via the Internet and Nevada is moving toward the implementation of online poker play, but Delaware is the only state so far to?
legalize comprehensive?online casino gaming.

Ahead of the Bell: Struggling RIM reports for 1Q

(AP) ? Research In Motion will provide an update on upcoming layoffs and may possibly reveal more details about the new BlackBerry 10 when it releases quarterly financial results after the market closes Thursday.

RIM is facing the most difficult period in its history. The company that fathered the ground-breaking BlackBerry in 1999, is weighing all options with a team of bankers it has hired as its market share is eroded by Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating software.

On Thursday, RIM will offer an update on its restructuring plan, which includes significant layoffs. The Canadian company is trying to save about $1 billion this year.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek expects RIM to cut about 6,000 of its roughly 19,500 employees this year.

Even with the launch of the a new operating system for BlackBerry 10, many believe it's too late to reverse RIM's fortunes after the company failed to heed the onslaught of touchscreen phones, like those made by Apple Inc.

And there are concerns that a shift from a physical keyboard on the new phone could alienate its hardcore base, which detest touchscreen technology. So much rides on the success of the new phone, that CEO Thorsten Heins has said the company's turnaround hinges upon it.

Boosted by overseas growth, RIM had 78 million worldwide subscribers as recently as last month, but Misek expects the company to start losing subscribers ? two to three million a quarter. He'll be watching Thursday's comments to see how many subscribers RIM has kept.

Analysts polled by FactSet on average expect Research In Motion Ltd. to report a quarterly loss of 3 cents per share on revenue of $3.08 billion. In the same quarter a year ago, RIM earned $695 million, or $1.33 per share, on revenue of $4.9 billion.

Woman accused of stealing, substituting cancer medication

BOSTON -

A Lynn woman faces two counts of felony larceny after police say she stole cancer medication from her longtime friend.

Donna Welch-Gowen was arraigned Monday on charges she swapped her friend's meds with ibuprofen on at least two separate occasions.

"I've known her for a long time -- 20 years I've known her -- and to think that she would steal my medication to get high," said the victim, Deborah Herrick, also of Lynn.

Herrick, 50, says she is heartbroken that her longtime friend would do this to her.

"I had a nervous breakdown right there," she told NewsCenter 5's Liam Martin on Wednesday. "I couldn't stop crying for four hours."

Herrick, suffering from stage 2 throat cancer, says a couple of weeks ago her symptoms worsened.

"I was having seizures after seizures," she said.

She went to the hospital, where the doctor told her she had abnormal levels of ibuprofen in her blood, and not enough of her cancer medication Neurontin, used to reduce pain and the risk of seizures in cancer patients..

Then she put it together.

She says she'd seen her friend, Welch-Gowen, snooping around her home, and her medication, just a few days before.

Ex-cruise worker files lawsuit against Travolta

(AP) ? A former cruise line worker has filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles against John Travolta, accusing the "Pulp Fiction" star of embracing him naked after complaining about neck pain.

The lawsuit was filed June 21 by Fabian Zanzi and seeks unspecified damages.

Zanzi contends Travolta disrobed and held him against his will during a Caribbean cruise three years ago.

The actor was accused recently in another federal lawsuit of groping two masseurs. The case quickly unraveled after Travolta's attorney, Martin Singer, discredited one of the anonymous accusers by showing the actor was across the country on the day of one of the alleged incidents.

Singer did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday from The Associated Press, but earlier, he told City News Service that Zanzi's complaint was "another ludicrous lawsuit with inane claims."

FishPi sets course for the open sea, captained by a Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi's journey to reach owners has been a lengthy one, but Greg Holloway is preparing to send his board on a longer voyage -- one across the Atlantic. Nestled inside a tupperware tub, the RaspberryPi is the brains of FishPi, an autonomous vessel -- guided by GPS and a compass -- that measures 20 inches from bow to stern. Currently in proof-of-concept form, the craft uses a 40 mm rotating propeller and draws juice from batteries powered by a 130 watt solar panel. Producing kits for students, enthusiasts and professionals is the goal of the project, but testing and development are still on the docket. While the Linux-laden launch isn't ready for the high seas quite yet, you can sail to the source for the technical breakdown or check it out at the Nottingham Hackspace Raspberry Jam next month.

6 ways Emma Stone lays on the charm

Carlos Alvarez / Getty Images

By Cody Delistraty

Emma Stone has had a slew of red carpet appearances and interviews lately to promote ?The Amazing Spider-Man,? but it?s been nothing but a breeze for the charismatic actress.

It seems no one?is immune to her understated beauty?and self-deprecating charm. In fact, her New York Magazine profile was so glistening that some article commenters lambasted its ?girl crush? tone. Her fashion sense has been the center of envious attention, and her off-screen relationship with her "Spider-Man" co-star Andrew Garfield (which she?s reticent to publicly discuss) seems to be going swimmingly.

Clearly, Stone is doing?something right. Taking a page out of Dale Carnegie?s famous self-help book, ?How to Win Friends and Influence People,? she?s smiling, listening and appreciating her rise to the ("Easy") A-list, making us fall deeper in love with her one step at a time.

From her PowerPoint-fueled Hollywood start to her humble rise to success, here are six ways that Emma Stone has won us over:

Ambitious adolescence
At 14, Stone enrolled as a freshman at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Ariz.,?but she wanted to go to Los Angeles to be in the movies. So, as she recounted to Blackbook Magazine,?in her freshman year she made a PowerPoint entitled "Project Hollywood 2004," set it to Madonna?s ?Hollywood? and used it to convince her parents to let her drop out of school and move to L.A. to audition for film and TV. Her mother stayed with her, homeschooling the Scottsdale, Ariz., native through high school.

Discerning choice of roles
Although ?The Amazing Spider-Man? will likely be the role that reaches the biggest audience, her success has been climbing ever since she starred as the heart-meltingly hot high-school dream girl Jules in ?Superbad.? She honed her comedic chops alongside co-star Jonah Hill before showing that con artists can be silly and sexy in ?Zombieland,??and then, drum roll please, ?Easy A? and??Crazy, Stupid, Love? helped perfect her smart, sexy, wry sense of humor which she followed with a serious turn in "The Help," establishing?a?hilarious, serious, various?persona?for the Emma Stone?we now know and love. ? ?

Trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man," in which Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy. Opens July 3.

Self-deprecating humor
The way Stone combines her sarcastic humor with real vulnerability has proven to be her siren song. Her turn as Olive Penderghast, a?high-school student who video?diaries her misunderstood "Scarlet Letter"-inspired life in "Easy A,"?allowed Stone to showcase a witty, cultured,?willing-to-be-humbled character?who's nothing but?unforgettable.?We hope she won?t use?her?siren song?to crash us into a cliff, though, because when she turns on the comedic charm, it?s impossible to look away.

Approachability
Between press tours, filming, photo shoots, interviews and maintaining some semblance of a personal life, the natural blonde seems nothing like the average 23-year-old. But compared to the likes of Angelina Jolie or Sean Penn -- who are off?doing good in?Cambodia and Haiti, respectively -- her stateside sensibility lends?itself to greater?approachability and relatability. We're sure she'll take up a cause or two when she's older and more firmly entrenched in the Hollywood elite, but for now, Stone?s youthful, live-in-the-Hollywood moment?sensibility?is a surprisingly?appreciated repose from the busy, hyperaffluent, seemingly out-of-touch movie star we're used to.

Understated (yet unbelievable) looks
Sony Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper noted that with red hair, Stone looks less?like ?someone who will steal your boyfriend,? according to New York Magazine. But whether she?s a redhead, blonde or brunette, the actress, who?s now?the new face of Revlon, could steal a boyfriend or two?sporting any hair color. ?The pretty thing ... it was never a value to me growing up,? she told the magazine, adding that she signed with Revlon so young girls would know they don?t have to look like models to be beautiful.?To?judge for yourself whether she doesn't have?the looks of a model,?here are a?few of her?"Spider-Man" red carpet looks.?(For the record, yes, she's model material.)

She?s not the center of the world (but she is)
Perhaps the most refreshing?-- although most?difficult to believe?-- quality of Stone is that she isn?t too interested in herself or in?sharing her stories. ?I freak out having a Facebook? she told New York Magazine, noting that she only wants her closest friends to know the most personal details of her life, specifically concerning Garfield. Yet, considering the fact that?her face seems to dominate the newstand (now on the?July?Vogue cover), if she wanted to tell story after self-centered story, we're sure millions would be glad to perk up and listen.

Tune into the TODAY show Tuesday for an interview with Emma Stone. Check your local listings for air time.

:11:57:
What best practices can you share from your experiences with enterprise architecture?

:27:53:
Your book "Confessions of a Used Program Salesmen" contains some rather humorous perspectives on Software Engineering ? what has changed in the 15 years since it was published?

:36:10:
Can you differentiate what Tech Packs are versus Learning Paths and Webinars?
"....Tech Packs are an annotated bibliography. It provides the user with a set of resources to self-familiarize yourself or self learn on a particular topic....The Learning Paths are more focused on a programming language. They are a resource that shows you where (on the web) to pick up courses or self learn....Webinars provide the professional with the opportunity to subscribe for realtime (where you actually listen to the speaker) and have the opportunity to interact by asking questions...."

:38:28:
You have 4 degrees: Math, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. How has that helped you in your career and what would you have added?

Daily Breeze Track and Field Coach of the Year: Serra's Lori Smith-Thompson

Click photo to enlarge

Serra track and field coach Lori Smith-Thompson

Serra track and field coach Lori Smith-Thompson saw an opportunity and wanted to make sure her teams knew exactly what was at stake.

Twice Smith-Thompson called team meetings before Serra's biggest meets of the season - the CIF Southern Section finals and the CIF State finals.

The Serra war room featured a whiteboard full of projections and tangible goals for each meet. Each coach gave an impassioned pep talk about the historic opportunity that was within grasp for this talented group.

"It was kind of a tear-jerker, and it was motivating for all of us," Smith-Thompson said. "It was to keep them focused and tell them what we expected.

"Everybody was riled up and ready to make it happen."

Serra swept the CIF Southern Section Division IV team titles at Mount San Antonio College.

Eventually, Smith-Thompson hoisted a CIF State girls team trophy and a CIF State boys team runner-up trophy, posing with her players atop the podium on a toasty night at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

"We really wanted to put our name and our team on the map," said Serra senior Renetia James, a 400-meter state champion who also ran on both winning relays. "I was not leaving that stadium without at least one gold."

Ultimately, the girls captured their third straight CIF Southern Section title and their first CIF State crown. The boys won their sixth straight CIF Southern Section title and came within four points of winning their

second CIF State title.

Serra also had 10 individual CIF champions and six individual state champions.

"It turned out to be a tremendous year for the program, for myself and for the athletes," said Smith-Thompson, the 2012 Daily Breeze Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Injuries had plagued Serra in the past couple of years, but Smith-Thompson made injury prevention a top priority.

Smith-Thompson said she realized most schools don't have the manpower or the resources to handle the daily grind. So Smith-Thompson referred parents to a nutritionist, a chiropractor and a deep tissue specialist.

"We had a parent meeting at the beginning of the year, and I told them we all have to stay on top of injuries," Smith-Thompson said. "The parents are the ones who are going to be driving. They're the ones who had to get them there, so we needed to make sure they knew their options."

Her athletes described her as a task master, not afraid to crack the whip to make sure they were putting in the proper training.

But they also said Smith-Thompson was the first person to congratulate them on a job well done and was always eager to honor their accomplishments.

"I love Coach Lori," said Serra senior Alexis Faulknor, the 2012 Daily Breeze Girls Track Athlete of the Year. "She knows how to handle business and always shows up with her game face. We can be anywhere and she'll keep us going.

"She cares about all of us and works us to be the best we can be."

Adoree' Jackson, the 2012 Daily Breeze Boys Track Athlete of the Year, said Smith-Thompson gave him an extra push in helping him win the state long jump title.

"She taught me things I need to know and the workouts I needed," Jackson said. "She taught me to be a better person and athlete on and off the track. I give a lot of thanks to her for helping me become as fast and explosive as I am now."

Smith-Thompson is quick to credit her Serra coaching staff, a distinguished group that includes sprints coach Chris Faulknor, hurdles coach Derrick Knight and jumps coach Russell Biggs.

"I can call myself the head coach, but it takes a team of people to bring it all together," said Smith-Thompson, who has coached the 2007 IAAF World Youth Team in the Czech Republic and was the team manager for the 2009 IAAF World Youth Team in Italy.

Smith-Thompson also tried to teach her team to be humble and to honor God.

Her athletes also seemed genuine in praising God and with their team prayers.

James said Isaiah 54:17 applies to Serra: "No weapon formed against me shall prosper." They were not going to let injuries or outsiders slow them down.

"I can do all things through Christ," James said.

And through Smith-Thompson as well.

Egypt army talks tough as Tahrir protests

CAIRO (Reuters) - Cairo's Tahrir Square relived its glory days of the revolution on Friday as tens of thousands of flag-waving protesters called on the Egyptian army to relinquish power, in defiance of a stern communiqu? from the generals criticizing the Muslim Brotherhood.

All day, through weekly prayers in the baking midday sun to an evening clamor for change, demonstrators, mostly marshaled by the Islamist movement and its allies, called on the military to make good on promises to hand over to a civilian and end the prolonged uncertainty over last weekend's presidential election.

With the result of the run-off between the Brotherhood's man and a former general expected by Sunday, there was an anxious mood as many vowed to follow their leaders' calls to camp out until the army also cancels an order curbing the powers of the new president and revokes its dissolution of parliament.

"This is a classic counter revolution that will only be countered by the might of protesters," said Safwat Ismail, 43, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood who came from north Egypt.

"I am staying in the square until the military steps down."

The generals flatly refused, heightening a sense of deadlock in achieving the democracy protesters thought they had won with blood spilt on Tahrir Square during last year's Arab Spring, though in the background, officials from army and Brotherhood have been talking, leading some to see a compromise ahead.

In a brusque, four-minute statement read on state television as Egyptians were completing their Friday prayers, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) stood by what critics at home and in the West have called a "soft coup" intended to prolong six decades of military rule many believed had ended.

"The issuance of the supplementary constitutional decree was necessitated by the needs of administering the affairs of the state during this critical period in the history of our nation," the off-screen announcer said, in the bureaucratic language favored by the generals who pushed aside fellow officer Hosni Mubarak last year to appease the angry millions on the streets.

The Islamist presidential candidate, Mohamed Morsy, shot back that the generals were defying the will of the people and said protests would go on. But he stopped short of repeating a claim to have already won the election, urging simply a rapid announcement of the result, and praised the army as "patriotic".

In what were menacing tones for the army's old adversary the Muslim Brotherhood, SCAF criticized their premature announcement of the election result as sowing division and said people were free to protest - but only if they did not disrupt daily life.

PROTESTS

At Tahrir, the broad traffic interchange by the Nile in central Cairo was filled with makeshift tents offering shade from the scorching sun, hawkers offering an array of goods from tea to "I Love Tahrir Square" T-shirts. Many knelt in prayer during the weekly service at noon. Large groups of pious Islamists were bused in from the provinces by their parties.

The crowd, swelling when the heat of the day faded, chanted and waved Egyptian flags late into the evening.

Mahmoud Mohammed, a bearded, 31-year-old marine engineer from Alexandria among a group from the fundamentalist Salafist movement camping on the square, insisted they were not looking for a battle, but wanted to see democracy installed.

"The people elected a parliament and they put it in the rubbish bin. We need the army to hand over," he said. "No one came here for a fight. We need democracy."

Smaller groups of secular activists joined the mainly Islamist throng but the absence of many of the liberal urban youth who drove the early days of the revolt against Mubarak has highlighted a weariness with turmoil and a dismay at politics which have boiled down to Egypt's familiar choice between army and religion, the two best organized institutions, at the expense of candidates from the fragmented centre ground.

The deadlock between Egypt's two strongest forces has raised grave doubts about prospects for consensual democracy, though some see possible compromise, if Morsy does become president.

But the army and Brotherhood have cooperated warily since Mubarak fell and sources on both sides say that may continue, despite the military council infuriating the Islamists last week by dissolving the new parliament, which they had dominated.

The military council said on Friday it had no power to repeal the dissolution, saying that was down to judges who ruled some of January's election rules unconstitutional. Critics say the judges were appointed under Mubarak and are not impartial.

ELECTION

The Brotherhood fears a delay in announcing the result of the presidential election indicates an attempt to cheat - though opponents say it is the Islamists who are not playing fair.

Morsy and former general Ahmed Shafik both say they believe they won the run-off ballot. But it is Morsy's declaration of victory within hours of polls closing which has driven debate about underhand tactics in a country long used to vote-rigging.

The delay in publishing results, due on Thursday but not now expected until at least Saturday, is explained by officials as due to reviewing many appeals. But it has heightened anxiety on all sides, although most insist they will protest peacefully.

Morsy told a news conference he would continue to reject SCAF's decree. "The constitutional declaration clearly implies attempts by the military council to restrict the incoming president," he said. "This we totally reject."

But with no obvious resolution in sight to the stand-off, Morsy also made conciliatory references to the army. "There is no problem between us and our patriotic armed forces," he said.

CONSTITUTION

"We do not agree to the issuing of the constitutional decree and neither do the people," Morsy said. "Why do we need a supplementary declaration when we are going to draft a new constitution?"

The decree has also given the military power to step in and force the pace of drafting a constitution, a process slowed in parliament by a lack of consensus between Islamists and other parties. Some lawmakers involved were due to meet again on Saturday to try to make progress and keep control.

In a country where virtually no one can remember an election that was not rigged before last year, trust is low, not least among Brotherhood officials, many of whom, like Morsy, were jailed under Mubarak for their political activities.

The same electoral commission that handed 90 percent of a November 2010 parliamentary vote to Mubarak's supporters - a result which fuelled the protests that brought him down a few weeks later - sits in judgment on the new presidency.

Hassan Nafaa, a political analyst and critic of Mubarak, said. "The military council's statement is intended to scare the people and quell the revolutionary spirit of the nation through the firm authoritarian tone in which the statement was delivered. But this will not work because all politically aware civilians refuse the military's stewardship over the state."

Events of the past week, which also saw a renewal of the power of military police to arrest civilians, have troubled Western allies, notably the United States which has long been the key sponsor of the Egyptian armed forces but now says it wants to see them hand power to civilians.

Adding to unease, Mubarak is himself back in the news, being transferred to a military hospital on Tuesday evening from the prison where he began a life sentence this month.

Military and security sources have given a different accounts of his condition, from "clinically dead" at one point, to being on life support after a stroke to "stabilizing". Many Egyptians suspect his fellow generals may be exaggerating his illness to get their old comrade out of jail.
