It may be difficult to imagine, but pouring juice into a plastic cup can be a great challenge to a robot. While one hand holds the glass bottle firmly, the other one must gently grasp the cup. Researchers at Saarland University together with associates in Bologna and Naples have developed a robotic hand that can accomplish both tasks with ease and yet including the actuators is scarcely larger than a human arm. This was made possible by a novel string actuator, making use of small electric motors to twist strings. The robotic hand is thus powerful yet delicate and could one day be deployed as a helper around the house or in catastrophic scenarios.
We wanted to impart our robotic hand with a broad spectrum of human traits. Its artificial muscles should be able to deliver enormous forces by simple and compact means", explains Chris May, scientist at Saarland University's Laboratory of Actuation Technology. The robotic hand was recently presented during a meeting at the Forschungszentrum Informatik in Karlsruhe. It is an example of some of the new steps taken in robotic research within the scope of the European project DEXMART. Over the past four years international scientists developed various concepts, especially focussed on increasing the versatility with which two-arm robots can be implemented. The European Union sponsored the research consortium to the sum of 6.3 million Euros.

The sensorised and controlled robotic hand is able to touch diverse objects, to grasp and lift them and place them gently in a new position. Chris May demonstrated this in Karlsruhe with a delicate Easter egg and a heavy glass bottle.
Extremely strong polymer strings enable the Saarbrcken researchers to lift a five kilogram load by 30 mm within a split second, making use of a small electric motor and a 20 cm long string. Each robotic finger, which like a human finger is comprised of three segments, can be controlled precisely by means of the individual tendons ", describes Chris May the novel miniature actuator. The mini electric motors run at high speed and a small torque on the order of five Newton-millimetres. The capability of the robotic hand is so near to that of humans that the vision of robots as personal assistants in the household, in the operating room as well as in industrial settings is becoming ever more realistic. We presume that the combination of small electric motors with twisted string is interesting for other applications as well", the researcher reckons.
Complementing the topics of robotic hand design, actuation and sensor development, the other DEXMART research teams addressed topics of programming by demonstration, object grasping and manipulation as well as human-robot interaction. A total of eight universities and research institutes in Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain participated in the European funded research initiative.

Every morning you take your dog for a stroll in the park to have some fresh air and start a good day. Don?t be surprised if you see your colleague?s dog roaming around in the office. Well if some researchers are to be believed then it is a good habit. According to them, by bringing pet dogs to the office there is decrease in the stress that is generated.
It seems odd as usually this practice is not allowed, but Randolph Barker, who is a professor of management at Virginia Commonwealth University's business school in Richmond and who led the study in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management states that pet presence can potentially act as a low-cost wellness intervention.
He came to this conclusion after the study that was conducted by his team at Replacements Ltd. This company has been allowing pets to its office for over one and half decade. There are about 20 to 30 pets dogs that are brought to it office by the employees every day. They just lie quietly alongside their owners feet while they work. Even the chief executive has the same practice of bringing his dog to office.
The scientists compared the employees who brought their dogs to work with those who had a pet but kept them at home. They then measured the levels of the stress hormone cortisol among these participants. It was found that the average stress level was nearly 11% less among employees who brought their dogs to office, while for those who didn?t bring had an increase in their stress levels by 70%.
There are no clear facts on why this happened, or how these dogs help in reducing stress at work, but one thing is clearly that it surely works.

The league has admitted to the Redskins that the teams did nothing wrong and violated no rules.? Still, the NFL contends that treating the term ?uncapped year? too literally disrupted competitive balance ? even though the decision of multiple teams to grossly underspend in 2010 apparently gave rise to no such concerns.
The Redskins have been working to rectify the situation, privately communicating with the league and separately making plans for potential litigation.? But while no Redskins official has said anything publicly about the situation, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opted on Friday to put the rest of the league on notice that he won?t take this one lying down.
And he shouldn?t.
As we understand it, the teams will try at the league meetings to lobby other owners, making the case for some adjustment to the punishment sans crime.? If, in the end, the Redskins and Cowboys get nowhere, litigation could occur.
?[T]here is no joy in Mudville, having to team up with the Redskins on a point with the league,? Jones told the Dallas Morning News. ?They?re competitors, not cohorts.? In our view, the league needs to fix this before it spirals out of control.? It?s now obvious that the NFL was engaged in collusion in the uncapped year, trying to keep more money in the owners? pocket and less in the players? as a possible year without football loomed.? Still, forcing the Redskins and Cowboys to reduce to writing an allegation that the NFL and its teams tried to rein in spending and is now punishing the two that refused to go along with the illegal plan won?t be good for business.

New Rochelle, NY, March 21, 2012Healthy individuals who carry a gene variation linked to an increased risk of autism have structural differences in their brains that may help explain how the gene affects brain function and increases vulnerability for autism. The results of this innovative brain imaging study are described in an article in the groundbreaking neuroscience journal Brain Connectivity, a bimonthly peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc (http://wwwliebertpub.com). "This is one of the first papers demonstrating a linkage between a particular gene variant and changes in brain structure and connectivity in carriers of that gene," says Christopher Pawela, PhD, Co-Editor-in-Chief and Assistant Professor, Medical College of Wisconsin. "This work could lead to the creation of an exciting new line of research investigating the impact of genetics on communication between brain regions."
Although carriers of the common gene variant CNTNAP2identified as an autism risk genemay not develop autism, there is evidence of differences in brain structure that may affect connections and signaling between brain regions. These disruptions in brain connectivity can give rise to functional abnormalities characteristic of neuropsychological disorders such as autism.

Emily Dennis and coauthors from UCLA School of Medicine and UCLA (Los Angeles, CA) and University of Queensland and Queensland Institute of Medical Research (Brisbane, Australia), used a sophisticated imaging technique to study the brains of healthy young adults who are carriers of CNTNAP2.
