Olympic viewing: NBC critics loud on social media

NEW YORK (AP) ? In the age of social media, NBC now has millions of television critics who make their opinions known about every aspect of Olympics coverage instantly.

They've even set up their own hashtag on Twitter: (hash)nbcfail. The online complaints focused Saturday on NBC's decision to air the marquee swimming event won by American Ryan Lochte on tape delay in prime time, and Friday on the network not streaming the opening ceremony online. Sunday's critics started early: people wondering why the U.S. men's basketball team's opening game aired on a cable network while women's cycling was shown on NBC.

The conversation is so active that NBC's executive producer of the games, Jim Bell, took to Twitter to answer critics and even change the way NBC is doing something in response.

"(hash)nbcfail is filled with a lot of crying and snark and humor, but NBC can actually learn something from it," said Jeff Jarvis, a media critic who writes the Buzzmachine.com blog.

Complaints about tape delayed coverage are an evergreen with Olympics held on foreign soil. But the London Games are the first with Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites in full flower, in a mobile phone era where people carry computers that instantly deliver news in their pockets. It has amplified the impatience of viewers who want to see events on their large-screen TVs instantly and haven't been mollified by NBC's decision to stream the events live online.

James Poniewozik, Time magazine TV critic, tweeted that "NBC tape delay coverage is like the airlines: its interest is in giving you the least satisfactory service you will still come back for."

That drew a quick response from NBC's Bell: "You do know that all sports events are being streamed live right?"

"I do, indeed!" replied Poniewozik. "Have enjoyed it. Apparently a lot of folks still prefer watching it on TV."

NBC says it saves big events for prime-time airing because that is when most viewers are available to watch them and where the network makes the bulk of its advertising revenue. Since prime time on the U.S. East Coast coincides with 1 a.m. London time, there are no events to air live then. NBC representatives noted that there were 39 hours of live events Sunday on NBC and its affiliated networks.

Even as it defends its approach, NBC clearly hears those critics. One of Bell's Facebook posts highlighted coverage of Sunday's cycling race by saying it was all-caps LIVE. The network advertised its live streaming on the prime-time broadcast.

Jonathan Wald, who produces Piers Morgan's CNN talk show and used to work at NBC, tweeted that "the medal for most Olympic whining goes to everyone who complains about what happens every four years. Tape delay."

One of those complainers, in fact, was Morgan: He tweeted his disdain Friday for NBC's decision not to make the opening ceremony available live.

The advent of Twitter makes it seems as if there's a lot of unhappiness when the majority of viewers are watching NBC on tape delay and appear satisfied with it, Wald said in an interview.

NBC can point to television ratings justifying their approach. The Nielsen company said the opening ceremony drew more than 40 million people Friday, the most ever for one of those Olympic events. Saturday's first night of coverage was seen by 28.7 million, another record, beating every other first night of Olympic competition. In Beijing four years ago, 24 million watched on the corresponding night.

Jarvis said he believes NBC could satisfy fans by, for example, televising events like Lochte's race live in the afternoon and then repeating it at night. He acknowledges, though, that he's not the one who'd potentially be risking millions of dollars in advertising revenue if such a decision cut into prime-time viewing.

NBC has tried to "hold on to old media strategies in a new media world," Jarvis said. "And that's a mistake."

Some of the online complaints seem to take special glee in bashing NBC, with a few describing it like an Olympic sport of its own. Some are quite personal, like the CNN producer who tweeted Sunday: "No USA basketball in my hotel room. Why they aren't putting it on NBC's main channel is beyond me!"

Bell, in some of his back-and-forth with online critics Sunday, answered one tweeter who described herself as a St. Louis mom and complained about NBC's "Nightly News" on Saturday airing results of events that hadn't been shown on the network yet. Bell tweeted that he'd look into it, and shortly after told her that "Nightly News" would announce a "spoiler alert" to tell people to avert their eyes if they didn't want to see results.

Not everyone online is a critic. On Sunday, the U.S. Olympic sailing team tweeted that it was "by far the greatest sailing TV coverage in Olympic history."

ROWDY vs. PHELPS: Does Michael Phelps need bulletin board material anymore? If so, Rowdy Gaines provided it with his sharp criticism of Phelp's first final this weekend. "He just didn't train for it ... You can't fake that event," Gaines said.

UP CLOSE: Understand NBC's need to help us get to know obscure athletes in obscure sports. But the news about two synchronized divers who both collect rubber ducks felt like self-parody.

UPCOMING: Ryan Lochte's bid for a second gold medal is featured on NBC's Monday night coverage.

California: The Road Warrior Is Here

Where?s Mel Gibson When You Need Him?

George Miller?s 1981 post-apocalyptic film? The Road Warrior?envisioned an impoverished world of the future. Tribal groups fought over what remained of a destroyed Western world of law, technology, and mass production. Survival went to the fittest ? or at least those who could best scrounge together the artifacts of a long gone society somewhat resembling the present West.

In the case of the Australian film, the culprit for the detribalization of the Outback was some sort of global war or perhaps nuclear holocaust that had destroyed the social fabric. Survivors were left with a memory of modern appetites but without the ability to reproduce the means to satisfy them:? in short, a sort of Procopius?s description of Gothic Italy circa AD 540.

Our Version

Sometimes, and in some places, in California I think we have nearly descended into Miller?s dark vision ? especially the juxtaposition of occasional high technology with premodern notions of law and security. The state deficit is at $16 billion. Stockton went bankrupt; Fresno is rumored to be next. Unemployment stays over 10% and in the Central Valley is more like 15%. Seven out of the last eleven new Californians went on Medicaid, which is about broke. A third of the nation?s welfare recipients are in California. In many areas, 40% of Central Valley high school students do not graduate ? and do not work, if the latest crisis in finding $10 an hour agricultural workers is any indication. And so on.

Our culprit out here was not the Bomb (and remember, Hiroshima looks a lot better today than does Detroit, despite the inverse in 1945). The condition is instead brought on by a perfect storm of events that have shred the veneer of sophisticated civilization. Add up the causes. One was the destruction of the California rural middle class. Manufacturing jobs, small family farms, and new businesses disappeared due to globalization, high taxes, and new regulations. A pyramidal society followed of a few absentee land barons and corporate grandees, and a mass of those on entitlements or working for government or employed at low-skilled service jobs. The guy with a viable 60 acres of almonds ceased to exist.

Illegal immigration did its share. No society can successfully absorb some 6-7 million illegal aliens, in less than two decades, the vast majority without English, legality, or education from the poorer provinces of Mexico, the arrivals subsidized by state entitlements while sending billions in remittances back to Mexico ? all in a politicized climate where dissent is demonized as racism. This state of affairs is especially true when the host has given up on assimilation, integration, the melting pot, and basic requirements of lawful citizenship.

Terrible governance was also a culprit, in the sense that the state worked like a lottery: those lucky enough by hook or by crook to get a state job thereby landed a bonanza of high wages, good benefits, no accountability, and rich pensions that eventually almost broke the larger and less well-compensated general society. When I see hordes of Highway Patrolmen writing tickets in a way they did not before 2008, I assume that these are revenue-based, not safety-based, protocols ? a little added fiscal insurance that pensions and benefits will not be cut.

A coarsening of popular culture ? a nationwide phenomenon ? was intensified, as it always is, in California. The internet, video games, and modern pop culture translated into a generation of youth that did not know the value of hard work or a weekend hike in the Sierra. They didn?t learn ?how to open a good history book or poem, much less acquire even basic skills such as mowing the law or hammering a nail. But California?s Generation X did know that they were ?somebody? whom teachers and officials dared not reprimand, punish, prosecute, or otherwise pass judgment on for their anti-social behavior. Add all that up with a whiny, pampered, influential elite on the coast that was more worried about wind power, gay marriage, ending plastic bags in the grocery stores ? and, well, you get the present-day Road Warrior culture of California.

Conference Links Talent to Strategy | HRM Today

The focus of the 2012 Marcus Evan?s?Talent Management & Leadership Development Canada?conference was on refocusing the talent value chain to the organization?s vision. To set the stage for the conference, two data points were shared from recent i4cp research. The first is that high-performing organizations use customer related measures for their key performance indicators (KPIs) of leadership success more often than low-performing organizations (54.2% HPOs vs. 16.7% LPOs). The second was that high-performing organizations have a greater focus on segmenting critical roles and top talent when they are designing incentive pay.

Throughout the two-day event, attendees heard from a variety of senior HR leaders and their business leadership peers about how they are making business impact through strategic HR alignment. Glem Dias, Director of Strategic Talent Management at Pitney Bowes Canada, kicked off the first day by noting that investment analysts are looking for bench strength within organizations as they assess value. He noted that Pitney Bowes has identified 60 roles across the organization that are most critical to the success of their five year strategy and have aligned developmental efforts to support those future state needs.
Other highlights from the conference included:
  • A focused look at key talent management metrics that are shared with the board. Cheryl Fullerton, VP of Total Rewards and Performance Management at Maple Leaf Foods, shared three metrics they use, including the percentage of roles with two or more successors, the percentage of top talent retained and internal fill rate.
  • Several practical methods for sparking ?real? conversations about talent. Logie Bruce-Lockhart, Director of Talent Management at Sobeys, leverages a playground technique of picking teams as a way to get leaders to evaluate and discuss top talent. Natasha Rambaran, Director of Human Resources at Weight Watchers Canada, shared three questions for goal setting self-reflection and discussion with managers. Francine MacInnis, Interim Executive Director of Talent Management and Organizational Development at CBC/Radio-Canada, encouraged innovation through an art exercise that challenged the audience?s openness to innovation.
  • An examination of how curiosity ? focused through a business lens ? is crucial to effective of HR practices. Lisa Butler, Vice President of Human Resources Canada at Manulife Financial, discussed how they are looking for the underlying business implication across the data points that HR collects. Stephanie Argentine, Director of Global Talent Management and Organizational Development, shared how her team looks for the ?crack in the door? in order to identify business needs, how they generate internal support for change and how they create a business ?pull? instead of and HR ?push.?

As the conference concluded, Sylvain Messier, CA Vice President, Strategy and Development at The Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada, tweaked a Talent Management adage to provide his business viewpoint. He noted that their workforce planning efforts are designed to get the right people, at the right time, for the right cost. Yes, cost is in their equation as they think about when and where they need talent to make progress. As I reflect on the strategies of high-performing organizations, I think this twist to focus on costs provides clarity for assessing whether HR processes are designed with the bottom-line goals of the business in mind.

Monetary Policy Role in EU Debt Crisis Limited: Zoellick

As markets eagerly await a decision from the European Central Bank (ECB), which holds its policy meeting on Thursday, Robert Zoellick, former president of the World Bank, warned that monetary easing will do little to solve the region?s debt crisis.

Former World Bank President Robert Zoellick

?Monetary policy fundamentally buys time. It doesn't deal with the fundamentals,? Zoellick told CNBC in Singapore on Monday.

Following ECB President Mario Draghi?s pledge last week to do ?whatever it takes? to protect the euro zone from collapse, there were news reports on Friday that he was discussing a rate cut and new liquidity program, among other measures.

Zoellick, however, said what is most critical right now is that debt-laden nations like Spain and Italy implement fiscal and structural reforms.

?They have to make reforms. The Germans are right, they (Spain and Italy) have to fix their fiscal situation, but also structural reforms for competitiveness,? he said.

He added that euro zone nations need to ensure that Spain and Italy have access to funding as they carry out their reforms ? through measures such as the European Stability Mechanism or euro bonds.

?The most difficult issue is (avoiding a) mismatch between the time that the reforms will take effect and their financing,? he said.

In addition to this, he said ailing Spanish and Italian banks must be recapitalized. The European Union earlier this month agreed to lend up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) to rescue Spanish banks.

Role of the US in Debt Crisis

Discussing the role of the U.S. in solving the European debt crisis, Zoellick says first and foremost, America has to get its own fiscal house in order.

?The tendency is to kick the can down the path and maintain the status quo through inaction. That won't work this time,? he said. ?There's over a trillion dollars in spending cuts that will be made in defense and non-defense unless you act.?

By the end of the year, if Congress and President Barack Obama cannot agree on deficit-reduction targets, a series of tax increases and automatic budget cuts are set to kick in.

If the U.S. is successful in reining in its budget deficit, it would be a big boost in confidence for global markets, Zoellick added.

Apple takes Samsung to court over 'illegal knockoffs'

By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO ? Two tech titans will square off in federal court Monday in a closely watched trial over control of the U.S. smart phone and computer tablet markets.

Apple Inc. filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. last year alleging the world's largest technology company's smart phones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs of its popular iPhone and iPad products. The Cupertino-based company is demanding $2.5 billion in damages, an award that would dwarf the largest patent-related verdict to date.

Samsung counters that Apple is doing the stealing and that some of the technology at issue ? such as the rounded rectangular designs of smart phones and tablets ? have been industry standards for years.

The U.S. trial is just the latest skirmish between the two over product designs. A similar trial began last week, and the two companies have been fighting in courts in the United Kingdom and Germany. The case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for smartphones and computer tablets.

In the United States, U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose last month ordered Samsung to pull its Galaxy 10.1 computer tablet from the U.S. market pending the outcome of the trial, though the judge barred Apple attorneys from telling the jurors about the ban.

"That's a pretty strong statement from the judge and shows you what she thinks about some of Apple's claims," said Bryan Love, a Santa Clara University law professor and patent expert. Love said that even though the case will be decided by 10 jurors, the judge has the authority to overrule their decision if she thinks they got it wrong.

"In some sense the big part of the case is not Apple's demands for damages but whether Samsung gets to sell its products," said Mark A. Lemley, a Stanford Law School professor and director of the Stanford Program in Law, Science, and Technology.

Lemley also said a verdict in Apple's favor could send a message to consumers that Android-based products such as Samsung's are in legal jeopardy. A verdict in Samsung's favor, especially if it prevails on its demands that Apple pay its asking price to certain transmission technology it controls, could lead to higher-priced Apple products.

Lemley and other legal observers say it's rare that a patent battle with so much at stake doesn't settle short of a trial. Court-ordered mediation sessions attended by Apple's chief executive Tim Cook and high-ranking Samsung officials failed to resolve the legal squabble, leading to a highly technical trial of mostly expert witnesses opining on patent laws and technology. Cook is not on the witness list and is not expected to testify during what is expected to be a four week-trial.

Lemley, Love and others says it also appears that Apple was motivated to file the lawsuit, at least in part, by its late founder's public avowals that companies using Android to create smartphones and other products were brazenly stealing from Apple. To that end, Samsung's attorneys made an unsuccessful pitch to have the jury hear excerpts from Steve Jobs' authorized biography.

"I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong, I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product," Jobs is quoted as saying in Walter Isaacson's book "Steve Jobs" published in November. "I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

But the judge barred those statements in a ruling earlier this month.

"I really don't think this is a trial about Steve Jobs," Koh said.

Why You Should Use Organic Products On Your Lawn And In Your ...

Do you want to make your yard more private? You should think about using bamboo plants. Bamboo plants will grow much quicker than any tree or shrubs and will provide you with the privacy you need. Besides, they are easy to maintain and will make your yard look more exotic.

Landscape according to how much time you can commit. While an elaborate landscape might look good on paper, remember that it requires constant upkeep. When designing your garden think about your available time, your physical condition, and your budget. Only take on the responsibilities of a garden that you can easily cope with.

Start buying your materials in phases. Few people can afford to buy everything for their projects all at once. By dividing projects into multiple phases, you can pay for what you need as you go. This may save you money, help you keep track of your progress, and let you adjust plans prior to your next phase.

Consider stretching your landscaping plans over many phases. It is often forgotten, that you do not have to do everything at once. If you are on a budget, you can plan your complete plan around when you will have the money to pay for each section of the job. Do not feel that you have to do it all in one shot.

If your landscaping plans include flowers and other types of blooming plants, consider planting a variety of species that bloom in different parts of the season. With proper selections, you can ensure colorful blooms appear from early spring to late fall. This will provide color to your landscape throughout the growing season and make your land look vibrant and dynamic.

Common annuals and perennials will likely be cheaper for you to purchase at large home improvement stores than they would be if purchased at a greenhouse. These kinds of plants are going to be of the same quality and you do not need to spend a great deal of money on them. Inspect the plants closely before you purchase them no matter where you buy them from.

Always use odd numbers of plant groupings. It is more pleasing to the eye and more natural looking to see groups of 3, 5 or 7 plants than groups of 2, 4 or 6. Aim for plantings that are more triangle-shaped than square-shaped, and your landscaping will have more eye appeal.

Check outside of the Internet and large home improvement stores for your plants and materials. You may find botanical centers holding sales on plants. You may even want to ask around the neighborhood or check the classified ads to see if anyone has extra perennials that they are looking to get rid of.

If you are doing a landscaping project that requires equipment rental, consider asking your neighbors to share the costs. This is easy to do in a newly developed neighborhood, but if you ask around in any neighborhood you might inspire someone to undertake a project themselves. Sharing the expense can cut your costs a great deal.

You should know that prices fluctuate from one season to the other. You should compare prices for the materials you need and wait for the right moment to buy them. Buying in large quantities is also a good way to save money: do not be afraid to stock materials you know you will use later.

Make a list of the things you like and dislike about your current yard. Make sure you include all of your favorite things on your list as well as those you want to change so that you don?t make any changes that destroy things you already love about your yard.

Don?t forget to add color to your landscaping design. A few annual flowers can make a big difference in the appearance of your yard. They add something that is appealing to the eye, color. In addition, flowers will attract butterflies to your yard, which can be a lovely addition.

If your landscape includes a waterfall or pond, it is important you surround these areas with decorative stones and flowers that will not cover up the design of your structure. Make sure that any water items you have are complimented nicely so that it doesn?t take away from their natural appeal.

When planning a landscaping project for your house, try to encapsulate ideas that will bring a pleasant look to your yard no matter what time of the year it is. This is important because you do not want to spend all of your money on a yard that only looks good for a few months out of the year.

When planning a landscaping project for your house, consider breaking your entire project down into much smaller jobs. This is important if you are not able to afford the entire project at one time. Doing so will let you tackle your project bit by bit, and not have your yard look like a mess in the meantime.

Now that you know what landscaping is, it?s time to get outside and start working. The tips from this article will help you every step of the way, so all you have to do is put them to use, and your fauna will perk up, thanks to your successful landscaping.

Still, I got ready to go back to the hospital, but as I faltered getting things into my bag, it finally clicked that the tension headache that had been building all afternoon was not letting up, but was, in fact, getting worse. It only took a quick text to Jarod saying, ?I?m not feeling well,? to receive an offer that he would stay overnight with Elvie. I did go back to the hospital, with eyes closed on the streetcar to avoid excess dizziness, but only to exchange what Jarod needed at the hospital for what I would now need at home. It was that simple. I didn?t have to do anything other than let my husband know that I was struggling, and now I am home to do the only thing that will release the muscle which is causing all this nonsense: sleep. It is such a relief to parent with someone who can fill in the gaps that life unexpectedly leaves sometimes.

Back when I was single and hoping to get married and start a family, I had a friend who was constantly talking to me about marriage as a partnership. I didn?t think that sounded very romantic. It sounded like a business. A few very romantic relationships and just as many bout of brokenheartedness later, I realized that she might be on to something. So when I had my first date with Jarod and didn?t think it would go anywhere, I stopped, thought about it again, and decided that I would go on a second date. What I?d been doing in regards to finding a lifelong partner in crime had obviously not been working; I decided to try a new tactic, one that took into consideration first-date nerves and the value of a person who would be persistent but not overly emotional.

Nearly five years into our marriage, I can say that accepting that second date with Jarod was one of the best decisions I ever made. In him I?ve found a person who I am always comfortable with, who shares many of my opinions and values, and who is truly a partner and equal, and who regards me in the same way. Starting a family with him has been a beautiful thing, and I have loved watching him father Zinashi and now Elvie. With both girls, we have embraced certain challenges, and we have met those challenges together.

Going through this crisis with Elvie has further illuminated just what a great father and partner in parenting Jarod is. With Zinashi, I could often shoulder burdens myself and not have to ask for help, or if I did, it was more of a preference lately than a need. But with Elvie, there have been things that I absolutely couldn?t do on my own, like tonight. We may not have as much time to connect one-on-one as a couple, but I see how much he loves and values me through the way that he approaches our family life and steps in when I am unable to complete the task at hand.

Truth be told, I am a little sad that I didn?t make it through the last night with Elvie. I?m not sad, however, that Jarod is there with her. I know that in my absence, he will bring the nurturing she needs to make it through one last night at the hospital. And tomorrow, I?ll show up refreshed and feeling better, and we will bring our baby home together.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back sharply on spending. The slowdown in growth adds to worries that the economy could be stalling three years after the recession ended.

The Commerce Department also said Friday that the economy grew a little better than previously thought in the January-March quarter. It raised its estimate to a 2 percent rate, up from 1.9 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent isn't enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.2 percent last month. And most economists don't expect growth to pick up much in the second half of the year. Europe's financial crisis and a looming budget crisis in the U.S. are expected to slow business investment further.

"The main take away from today's report, the specifics aside, is that the U.S. economy is barely growing," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC. "Along with a reduction in the actual amount of money companies were able to make, it's no wonder the unemployment rate cannot move lower."

Some economic data improved over the course of the April-June quarter, while others worsened. Hiring, for example, rose slightly from April to May to June. But home sales weakened.

Stocks opened higher as investors appeared to shrug off the weak U.S growth and focus on a pledge from the European Central Bank president to keep the euro together. The Dow Jones industrial average was up about 70 points in late-morning trading, and broader indexes also rose.

The lackluster economy is raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said that the sluggish second-quarter growth rate is probably not weak enough to trigger more action by the Federal Reserve when it meets next week.

Many economists, however, believe the Fed will launch another round of bond buying at its September policy meeting. The aim is to drive long-term interest rates lower and encourage more borrowing and spending.

Glenn Hubbard, economic adviser for Romney, said Friday's report on growth was largely what economists were expecting. "But those expectations themselves and the report itself were actually quite disappointing," he noted.

"At that pattern, the economy simply will never return to full employment," he said.

Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said the report showed the economy grew for the 12th straight quarter.

Congress could strengthen growth and job creation by adopting President Barack Obama's plan to extend expiring tax cuts for all but the wealthiest Americans, Krueger said.

Republicans want the tax cuts extended for all Americans.

The 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter was the weakest since the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, expanded at a 1.3 percent rate in the July-September quarter last year. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of a cup of coffee to the sale of fighter jets.

Current-dollar GDP increased at an annual rate of $117.6 billion in the second quarter to $15.6 trillion.

Growth was weaker mostly because consumer spending slowed to a growth rate of just 1.5 percent. That's down from 2.4 percent in the first quarter. Americans bought fewer autos, computers and other long-lasting manufactured goods. Spending on services increased.

They also saved more. The savings rate increased to 4 percent, up from 3.6 percent in the first quarter.

Consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, was offset somewhat by a slightly smaller drag from the government. Spending by governments fell at an annual rate of 1.4 percent in the second quarter, just half of the 3 percent rate of decline in the first quarter.

The Commerce Department also revised its growth estimates for the past three years. Those revisions showed that the economy contracted 3.1 percent in 2009, slightly less than the 3.5 percent previously reported. Growth in 2010 was put at 2.4 percent, down from 3 percent, with growth in 2011 at 1.8 percent instead of 1.7 percent.

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

$750,000 award will fund research to find renewable, efficient hydrogen biofuel

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An Indiana University biologist investigating how microbes might interact to better produce biofuels from renewable resources has received a $750,000 U.S. Department of Energy Early Career Research Program award, the agency's most prestigious award for early-career, tenure-track teachers and scholars.

James "Jake" McKinlay, an assistant professor in the IU College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology, received the five-year funding award from the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. His proposal to explore how two microbial species might work better together than alone in producing hydrogen gas biofuel was one of 68 funded from 850 submitted.

Numerous microbes can convert renewable resources into products such as biofuels, and to date most efforts have focused on engineering single species that can perform all the necessary tasks needed to produce biofuels, McKinlay said.

"Coordinating all these tasks in a single microbe can be challenging and can lead to undesired traits like the inefficient use of the food source," he said. "But in nature, diverse microbes often work together to use food sources like plant-derived lignin and cellulose that resist degradation. The idea here is to create a similar cooperative relationship in the lab where each microbe supplies the other with a nutrient required for survival."

By creating a co-culture -- a mixture of two microbial species -- McKinlay hopes to decipher how metabolisms of the two microbes interact, how they might evolve together to improve nutrient transfer, and how they might be optimized to create a tailor-made mixture for the economical production of hydrogen gas and other biofuels from renewable resources. Currently, over 90 percent of the hydrogen gas used by society is derived from fossil fuels, and while numerous microbes convert renewable resources into hydrogen gas, none are currently competitive against the existing industries.

"We're taking a lesson from nature that multiple microbial species help each other to thrive on food sources such as plant residues that those same species could not use if on their own," he said. "We already know that mixtures of specialized microbes can sometimes outperform a single engineered strain for producing chemicals of value to society."

The idea is to develop a co-culture of a photosynthetic bacteria and a fermentative microbe that uses sugar and energy from sunlight to produce hydrogen gas. The idea was first attempted by other researchers about 30 years ago, but obtaining a stable relationship between the two species has persisted as a major obstacle. McKinlay has addressed this obstacle, imposing a strategy that ensures that the two microbes can maintain a long-term cooperative relationship. This approach paves the way for experiments that could not otherwise be done and will ideally lead to a road-map for devising strategies to enhance biofuel production.

Before coming to IU in 2011, McKinlay most recently was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington. He earned a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2006 and earlier this year was one of two junior faculty members from IU to receive a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities, a consortium of universities in strategic partnerships with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Harvard Says Home Remodeling is Poised to Bust LooseIf the experts at Harvard say something, a lot of folks listen up. And right now, Harvard says home remodeling is "poised to bust loose." What does this mean? The article from National Mortgage News says home improvement spending could be in double digit growth by as early as the first quarter of 2013.

The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University is reportedly projecting a steady growth from $113.6 Billion in the second quarter of this year to $128.9 Billion in the first part of next year. That's a 12% increase.

Here's an excerpt from the National Mortgage News article explaining how this plays into the current housing market:

The Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity is designed to estimate national homeowner spending on improvements for the current quarter and subsequent three quarters. The indicator, measured as an annual rate-of-change of its components, provides a short-term outlook of homeowner remodeling activity and is intended to help identify future turning points in the business cycle of the home improvement industry.

For current homeowners who want to begin a home remodeling project, paying for the work is likely a major hurdle. With home equity at all time lows, the old way of financing home improvements through a home equity line of credit is pretty well played out. Using credit cards or store credit in today's economic climate is also a bit risky. So what is a homeowner to do?

    Refinance and Remodel

One option is the refinance and remodel idea through an FHA-backed mortgage called the 203k. This home improvement loan is tailored for homeowners (and home buyers) who want to take a house and turn it into a dream home. Whether it's needed repairs or desired upgrades, a lot of home remodeling projects are covered.

With the FHA 203k refinance & remodel, you could:

      • design and build a deck
      • repair a porch
      • repair or replace your roof
      • get new windows
      • repaint your house, inside and out
      • replace old carpet
      • install tile or laminate flooring
      • remodel the kitchen - including new appliances
      • waterproof the basement

About the only work not covered by the FHA 203k is anything considered a luxury item. But do you really want tennis courts?

This home remodeling bump-in-business is good news for the economy, jobs, homeowners and more. New construction is one indicator of a recovering housing market and economy, but new houses aren't the only jobs for builders and contractors. Remodeling homes is a great way to give people a "new place" to live and build a business.

For many homeowners, selling their current house and finding a new place just isn't a desirable situation. In this case, upgrading the home for a growing family or changing tastes might be perfect. Contractors who understand this and are able to help homeowners find a way to finance the work have stayed busy in the downturn. Now this "bust loose" situation will only help to increase business.

Historians discover medieval banking records hidden under coats of arms

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? A rare accounting document, half-concealed beneath a coat of arms design, has revealed the activities of Italian bankers working in early 15th century London, decades before the capital became a financial powerhouse. The discovery was made by economic historians at Queen Mary, University of London.

Among the pages of a bound collection of traditional English crests held at the London College of Arms -- the headquarters of British heraldry -- are several papers belonging to a book of debtors and creditors for Florentine merchant-banking company, Domenicio Villani & Partners.

The coats of arms are estimated to have been painted in 1480, during a time when good quality paper was scarce and anything that was available was re-used.

The banking records, only half-covered by the design, date from 1422-24 and hint at the extensive trade in wool and other commodities produced in Britain during the era.

Dr Francesco Guidi-Bruscoli, who is based at the University of Florence and also a Research Fellow at Queen Mary, and Professor Jim Bolton of Queen Mary's School of History have spent more than a decade working on the Borromei Bank Research Project, documenting the activity of Italian merchant bankers operating from London in the late medieval period.

Dr Guidi, who was alerted to the Villani ledger's location by QM historian, Professor Kate Lowe, comments: "What makes the discovery of these pages so surprising is that, usually, the foreign offices of the Florentine companies periodically sent the books back home so they could be checked.

"In this case, the books remained in London, where they gradually lost their documentary value and some 55 years later were considered scraps of good quality paper to be re-used for the drawing of coats of arms."

Cross-checks with documents held in the Florentine States Archives allowed Dr Guidi to identify the otherwise anonymous ledger. He has translated the documents from their original Italian, with the results of the find published earlier this year (but bearing the date of 2010) in the Italian journal Storia economica.

"It is not possible to reconstruct, from such a limited number of transactions, the full activities of the company to which the ledger belongs, but we can get an idea of the goods being traded in the London marketplace," Dr Guidi says. "Raw wool, woollen cloth and tin were popular exports, while we imported spices, dyes and other luxury goods."

By the late Middle Ages, Italian merchants had created far-reaching pan-European networks. Their business involved international trade, exchange by means of written instruments and loans to sovereigns and popes. England's trade in commodities, such as wool and woollen cloth, eventually led to the nation becoming the financial hub of the West, overtaking Italy in status.

Another research project on Italian bankers by Dr Guidi and colleagues at Bristol was recently published as 'EarlyView' in the academic journal Historical Research and attracted international attention after they discovered financial records demonstrating that the voyage made by the Venetian John Cabot under the patent of Henry VII of England was financed by Italian bankers (the London-based Florentine company of the Bardi). The same records refer to a journey towards "the new land," thus implying that the money was given to Cabot so that he could find previously discovered (or at least heard of) land.
