The school's storied history didn't begin until September 1913, but an alumni organization decided that the anniversary called for 12 months of commemoration.
"The stories are incredible," said Janice Bayouth, director of magnet schools at Tulsa Public Schools and co-chairwoman of the BTW Centennial Organization.
"Somebody has to write a book about it because it is a rich history."
The organization was established and began the work of planning centennial events more than a year ago. The group is composed of alumni and current administrators and faculty members.
All proceeds from centennial events will be donated to the school during the fall of 2013 and be used to buy school supplies.
The centennial celebration will officially begin at 11 a.m. Saturday with a ceremony in front of the Booker T. Washington Historical Building, 1631 E. Woodrow Place.
Proclamations from the state of Oklahoma, state Board of Education, Tulsa mayor, City Council and Tulsa school board will be read. Tours of the historical building will be available, and photos and other mem- orabilia will be on display. A reception will follow.
Later Saturday, a social mixer will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at Billy's on the Square, on the corner of Fifth and Main streets in downtown Tulsa.
All students, alumni and their families are invited to attend the events.
