Gov't sells more GM shares, cuts stake to 7 pct.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The U.S. government says it's starting another phase of selling General Motors stock after cutting its stake to just over 7 percent.

The Treasury Department says it still owns 101.3 million GM shares. It got 912 million GM shares in exchange for a $49.5 billion bailout of GM in 2009. So far taxpayers have recovered about $35.4 billion. That means they're still $14.1 billion in the hole on the bailout.

To break even, the remaining shares would have to sell for nearly $140 each. At the current price of $37.19, the government would get nearly $3.8 billion more. So taxpayers are likely to lose around $10 billion on the deal.

The Treasury plans to sell all of its shares by the first of April.

The search for an experienced fundraiser at Union College

Donna Abbott-Vlahos

Union College in Schenectady, NY, is looking for a major gifts officer who will be expected to raise $1 million a year

Union College is looking for a major gifts officer to build long-term relationships with parents of students whose wealth is $100,000 or more.

The position pays between $50,0000 and $80,000, depending on experience.

Scott Rava, director of principal gifts at the private, 2,200-student college in Schenectady, NY tells me the person they hire will be expected to raise $1 million a year, and make between 12 and 15 visits a year, most of them on the Eastern seaboard.

So far, the college has received 30 applications for the job, which has the official title of ?major gift officer for parents.? The position was vacated a month ago by someone who took an early retirement, Rava says.

Three other people have that title at Union, and another four ?principal gift officers? develop donor relationships with alumni and high-wage-earning families.

Interviews will start in two or three weeks. The posting is here.

Rava tells me it takes years to establish strong relationships with donors.

?We?re trying to build liaisons with our top prospects,? he says. ?It?s an issue of trust.?

Allen covers education, restaurants, transportation and nonprofits.

Aging population faces cancer-care crisis - Mon, 23 Sep 2013 PST

The U.S. is facing a crisis in how to deliver cancer care, as the baby boomers reach their tumor-prone years and doctors have a hard time keeping up with complex new treatments, government advisers reported?recently.

The caution comes even as scientists are learning more than ever about better ways to battle cancer, and developing innovative therapies to target?tumors.

And while doctors try to optimize treatment, the Institute of Medicine found ?daunting? barriers to achieving high-quality care for all patients. Overcoming those challenges will require changes to the health care system, and savvier?consumers.

Dr. Patricia Ganz of UCLA chaired an Institute of Medicine panel that found the U.S. is dealing with a crisis in how to deliver cancer care. New diagnoses are expected to reach 2.3 million a year as the population?ages.

The U.S. is facing a crisis in how to deliver cancer care, as the baby boomers reach their tumor-prone years and doctors have a hard time keeping up with complex new treatments, government advisers reported?recently.

?We do not want to frighten or scare people who are getting care now,? said Dr. Patricia Ganz, a cancer specialist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who chaired the?panel.

But too often, decisions about cancer treatments aren?t based on good evidence, and patients may not understand their choices and what to expect, the panel found. For example, some studies suggest that two-thirds or more of cancer patients with poor prognoses incorrectly believe the treatments they receive could cure?them.

Topping the list of recommendations is finding ways to help patients make more informed decisions, with easy-to-understand information on the pros, cons and costs of different?treatments.

?The patient can?t be passive,? Ganz said. ?It?s an important partnership that we?need.?

The risk of cancer increases with age, and older adults account for just over half of the 1.6 million new cases diagnosed each year. By 2030, new diagnoses are expected to reach 2.3 million a year as the population ages. The report warns there may not be enough oncology specialists to care for?them.

Perhaps a bigger concern is the growing complexity of care. Increasingly, scientists are finding genetic differences inside tumors that help explain why one person?s cancer is more aggressive than another?s. More importantly, that also means certain cancer drugs will work for, say, lung cancer in one person but not the?next.

?If your doctor doesn?t know that, or your hospital doesn?t do the test, you don?t have that opportunity? for newer, targeted therapies, Ganz said. But, ?we are living in an information age where it?s impossible to keep?up.?

It?s not just a matter of knowing the latest treatments, but deciding if they?re worth it for an individual patient. Consider: Of 13 cancer treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration last year, only one was proven to extend survival by more than a median of six months, the report said. The drugs all cost more than $5,900 for each month of?treatment.

For older adults, treatment decisions may be even more complicated ? because the studies that test different therapies don?t include enough people over age 65, who tend to have multiple health problems along with cancer, Ganz?explained.

Nor are cancer teams doing a good enough job in educating and training patients? loved ones to offer the at-home care that many need for long stretches of time, she?said.

The Institute of Medicine advises the government about health issues. Among its recommendations: More research to tease out how to best treat different patients; new strategies to help doctors keep up with that evidence; and development of tools to help communicate the choices to patients so they understand what really may happen to?them.

In the meantime, the panel had some advice for people who need to know if they?re getting quality care?now.

Take the time to research care options and get a second opinion, Ganz stressed. Among the questions to?ask:

? How long does the average person with this cancer?live?

? What is my likelihood of a?cure?

? If I can?t be cured, will I live longer with treatment? How much?longer?

? Will this care directly treat the cancer, or improve my symptoms, or?both?

? What are the side?effects?

? Am I healthy enough to try this treatment, or will my other health conditions and medications?interfere?

? How many times have you done this?procedure?

? What does the care?cost?

? Am I eligible for clinical?trials?

If your health team doesn?t have answers, ?you need to find another set of providers,? Ganz?said.

Temple Church Choir to conclude Britten centenary year

(Photo: Simon Tottman)

The Temple Choir will be performing two concerts featuring the music of Benjamin Britten

The Temple Church Choir will be putting on two concerts in honour of Benjamin Britten this winter.

The concerts mark the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth and are part of a programme of special Britten events that have been taking place throughout the year.

The first concert on 20 November will take place at the choir's home church in London, the historic Temple Church, which 800 years ago was the regal chapel to the Knights Templar.

The programme for the evening will feature entirely the music of Britten, focusing on his magnificent St Nicolas cantata.

"In every choir I've conducted the children have always found Britten's music to be amongst their favourites. It seems most appropriate for the Temple Church Choir ? and in particular its choristers - to be taking such an active part in the celebration of his centenary," said Roger Sayer, Director of Music.

The 50-minute cantata is a celebration of the life and miracles of St Nicolas, the patron saint of children and seamen, and was written to mark the centenary of Lancing College.

The Temple Church Choir comprises 12 choir men and 18 boy-choristers, and will be joined by the Aurora Orchestra and the Holst Singers.

Oboist Nicholas Daniel will feature in a performance of Britten's 6 Metamorphoses after Ovid, for oboe Op 49.

The second concert is a festive performance and takes place on 9 December at London's Cadogan Hall.

The choir will give a performance of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols Op.28, alongside works by Byrd, Gibbons, Elgar, Bach and P?rt.

The work explores childhood innocence and was inspired by a sequence of medieval texts picked up in a bookshop in Nova Scotia when Britten's ship docked en route to England.

It was written for children's voices accompanied by harp and is one of Britten's best-known works.

A Ceremony of Carols was premiered by the Fleet Street Choir, a women's choir, in December 1942.

After acquittal, Zimmerman still in spotlight

LAKE MARY, Fla. (AP) ? Whether they think that he got away with murdering 17-year-old Trayvon Martin or that he was just a brave neighborhood watch volunteer "standing his ground," many Americans can't seem to get enough of George Zimmerman. And he can't seem to stop giving it to them.

So it's hardly surprising that everything Zimmerman does produces a Twitterverse explosion and spins out into heavy news coverage. Comedian Deon Cole nailed it during an appearance on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" a couple of days after the July 13 verdict. Merely being found not guilty, he said of Zimmerman, "doesn't mean that you're a free man."

He certainly hasn't been free from the spotlight.

?Two stops for speeding.

?A cellphone photo of a smiling Zimmerman touring the Florida factory where the 9 mm semi-automatic pistol used in the February 2012 shooting was made.

?And, this week, police dash-cam footage of Zimmerman kneeling in the street to be cuffed after an alleged scuffle with his estranged wife and father-in-law.

Like gangster Al Capone going to Alcatraz for tax evasion and O.J. Simpson serving time for robbing some sports memorabilia dealers, some interpret this series of unfortunate events as part of some cosmic comeuppance for a wannabe cop.

But is he a kind of George Ziggy-man, perpetually stalked by storm clouds, or more like one of those California wildfires, creating his own weather patterns?

Seems like a little bit of both, according to crisis management expert Mark McClennan.

"How does he keep resetting his 15 minutes of fame?" said the Boston-area consultant, who's on the Public Relations Society of America's board of directors. "I'd say it's a two-way street."

Granted, Zimmerman didn't expect his visit to the Kel-Tec CNC Industries factory in Cocoa, Fla., to be a public event. Zimmerman has turned down all Associated Press interview requests since his trail, and his lawyers didn't respond to messages about this story. But Shawn Vincent, a spokesman for the law firm that defended Zimmerman, told Yahoo News of the factory visit: "That was not part of our public relations plan."

But McClennan wasn't surprised when TMZ published a photo of Zimmerman shaking hands with a Kel-Tec employee ? and Zimmerman shouldn't have been, either.

"Instead of being a 24-hour news cycle, it's now a 24-second news cycle for anything to spring up," said McClennan, a senior vice president at Schwartz MSL. "You need to be careful of what you're doing. ... And if there's anything you do that is newsworthy or interesting, people are going to write about it, talk about it, share about it, tweet it, put it on YouTube ? because it's going to drive clicks, drive interest, and it's going to spread virally."

It's not just his public outings and repeated brushes with the legal system that have kept Zimmerman in the spotlight. Martin's parents were prominent participants in last month's 50th anniversary commemoration of the March on Washington, and several civil rights leaders have called for the repeal of "stand-your-ground" laws, which generally remove a person's duty to retreat if possible in the face of danger.

Even when he helped extricate a family from an overturned SUV in July, Zimmerman couldn't catch a break.

The grateful couple canceled a news conference, defense attorney Mark O'Mara said, "for the possibility of blowback against them." People immediately suggested the incident was staged ? or at least poked fun at the timing.

"Let's get this straight," Nigel Stevens wrote on the site www.opposingviews.com. "Zimmerman, in his only documented venture into the real world, heroically transforms into Volunteer Paramedic and rescues someone from deadly circumstances. Is this really happening? Aaron Sorkin and Steven Spielberg couldn't have collaborated to come up with that ending. "

Stevens ? after dubbing Zimmerman "the most vilified man in America" ? went on to suggest the next acts on the watchman's "Karmic Redemption Tour": Providing emergency childbirth assistance to Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, balancing Detroit's budget and capturing NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

Zimmerman certainly has his supporters. Several groups launched petition drives urging the Department of Justice not to pursue federal civil rights charges against him.

"The jury has spoken and found that the prosecution failed to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that George Zimmerman had malice or racism in his heart or even a reckless disregard for Trayvon Martin's life when he shot the teenager," declared a petition on dickmorris.rallycongress.com. "The Justice Department should now butt out."

But the trial seems to have set in motion some forces that are beyond Zimmerman's control.

In late August, Shellie Zimmerman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor perjury charge for lying during a bail hearing after her husband's arrest. Last week, she filed for divorce, and felt compelled to tell the world about it. On ABC's "Good Morning America," she called her husband "selfish" and accused him of leaving her with "a bunch of pieces of broken glass" after the acquittal.

Zimmerman blames the trial for the implosion of his marriage. His wife's attorney, Kelly Sims, said the couple have been on a "Tower of Terror" ? an apparent reference to the harrowing, "Twilight Zone"-themed ride at nearby Walt Disney World ? since the shooting and had spent only a few days together before the divorce filing.

But was it wise for Zimmerman to go to the home Monday and take photos while his wife and her family were there gathering belongings?

O'Mara said Zimmerman needs to be a lot more "circumspect" about what he does, since every action is "hyper-focused on and scrutinized."

"I understand they're not private individuals anymore ? never by their own doing," said O'Mara, who continues to handle Zimmerman's defamation lawsuit against NBC but does not intend to represent him if any charges result from this investigation. "Now, with everything that has happened in the past year and a half, it would be very nice if we could let them separate and divorce as they need to in two separate paths because they've decided they can't live together."

Zimmerman may be his own worst enemy. Defense attorney Barry Scheck notes that trouble often simply begets more trouble.

"The pressure from the situation often adds an additional distortion to their behavior," said Scheck, a co-director of the Innocence Project, and part of the "dream team" that helped win Simpson's acquittal on charges of killing his ex-wife and a friend. "So it's a very difficult situation, and I think the people that have been most successful with it are the ones that have a clear sense of what they're about and just stick to it."

McClennan insists that no reputation ? not even Zimmerman's ? is "irreparably beyond repair."

"In crisis management ... once you resolve the fundamental issues, you go into purgatory for a while, where you start building it again and you start making the positives," he said. "But any one misstep can bring it right back to the beginning again, and you've got to start building all over again."

Purgatory, at least in Catholic theology, suggests a temporary expiation on the way to a state of grace. Dr. Patrick Williams, a clinical psychologist and founder of the Institute for Life Coach Training, isn't so sure Zimmerman is heading in that direction.

Watching Zimmerman leading up to the trial, Williams said he saw "somebody who thought he did the community a favor, you know. Like he was some hero."

Williams said Zimmerman could certainly use some guidance, but the doctor doesn't see him "as a coachable person" as long as he keeps repeating the same old patterns.

"You know, the biggest predictor of your future is your past," he said. "If he doesn't get charged on this case, there'll be something else. I think people kind of create their reality. And I'm not sure he's learned to make good choices."

Martin's parents have declined to weigh in on Zimmerman's continuing legal troubles and what it all means. But their attorney, Benjamin Crump, noted that they "have always leaned on their faith through this whole ordeal.

"And they've always said that the killer of their unarmed child would have to answer to a higher authority."

Prepare For Tough Times If Your Job Has Anything To Do With Real ...

By Michael Snyder, on September 11th, 2013

If you have a job that involves building homes, buying homes, selling homes or that is in any way related to the mortgage industry, you might want to start searching for alternate employment. Seriously.

Interest rates are starting to rise dramatically, and mortgage lenders such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase are all cutting thousands of mortgage-related jobs. Last week, mortgage refinance activity plunged to the lowest level that we have seen since June 2009 and total mortgage activity dropped to the lowest level since October 2008.

Unfortunately, this is only the beginning.

Mortgage rates closely mirror the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries, the the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries has nearly doubled since early May. But it is still only sitting at about 3 percent right now. As I have written about previously, it has a ton of room to go up before it hits "normal" historical levels, and so do mortgage rates. As I noted the other day, some analysts believe that the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries is going to hit 7 percent eventually. If that happens, mortgage rates will be more than double what they are today. And we have already seen the average rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage go from 3.35 percent in May to 4.57 percent last week. If interest rates continue to rise we could be heading for a "housing Armageddon" that will make the last housing crash look like a Sunday picnic.

High iPhone price spooks investors, Apple shares drop

By Ryan Vlastelica and Eileen Soreng

REUTERS - Apple Inc's new iPhones got panned by Wall Street on Wednesday as investors decried one model for being too costly for emerging markets such as China, and dismissed the other model as lacking enough game-changing features.

The world's most valuable technology company missed an opportunity to introduce a low-end smartphone to drive sales in Asia, where Samsung Electronics and China's Huawei have a wide lead over Apple, analysts say.

The plastic iPhone 5C unveiled on Tuesday will sell for 4,488 yuan in China, Apple said. That is more than the average monthly urban income in China, and about double the cost of mid-tier devices from Samsung and other vendors. The cheapest phones in China, made by the likes of Xiaomi, go for about $100 apiece.

"Investors were put off that Apple's price point didn't go low enough to attract a new market. It doesn't have the same range in price that Apple's competitors have," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia, which manages about $58 billion in assets.

The high-end iPhone 5S disappointed Wall Street and revived fears that Apple's most innovative days may be behind it. The phone has a fingerprint scanner to improve security, but analysts said that was not likely to be enough to make the iPhone 5S a sure win in the crowded smartphone market.

"There was nothing transformational announced. It has the fingerprint scan and new colors, but bigger features, like different screen sizes, don't seem to be at the ready. This was less than expected from a company that has a reputation for surprising with a killer product or strategy," said Luschini.

Shares of Apple slid 5.4 percent to close at a month low of $467.71 on the Nasdaq after at least three brokerages downgraded their rating on the stock. Still, Apple remains up 18 percent since the start of July, when anticipation about the phones began building.

Apple executives - and the company's many fans in the industry - maintain both iPhones are best-in-class. While the corporation itself has not addressed the uproar over its iPhone 5C's price tag, some analysts say it's a good move to preserve margins while leaving room for future reductions.

WAITING FOR CHINA MOBILE

China is critical to Apple's growth prospects as its biggest market after the United States. Apple fell to No. 7 in the second quarter in China with a 5 percent market share, losing ground not just to Samsung but also to local rivals such as Lenovo and ZTE .

Early signs point to a lukewarm Chinese response to the new iPhones. Only 2.6 percent of 35,000 Chinese consumers surveyed by Web portal Sina.com said they would consider buying the 5C.

"We worry that Apple's inability (or) unwillingness to come out with a low-priced offering for emerging markets nearly ensures that the company will continue to be an overall share loser in the smartphone market until it chooses to address the low end," Sanford C. Bernstein analysts said in a note.

Wall Street is banking on Apple securing a partnership deal with China Mobile Ltd soon, granting the iPhone more than 740 million potential buyers. Some investors were disappointed that a deal was not announced on Tuesday.

Still, the iPhone 5C carries a total component cost of $165, versus the $199 of the last-generation iPhone 5 and $236 for Samsung's top-tier Galaxy S4 smartphone, according to IHS iSuppli's preliminary estimates - suggesting there is room to cut prices if warranted.

"Rather than offer attractive pricing for consumers, and move the iPhone 5C into a new and growing price segment, Apple retained a premium pricing strategy in targeting the $400-800 smartphone segment," Credit Suisse analyst Kulbinder Garcha wrote in a note.

"This segment is not forecast to see meaningful growth long term. This decision, at the margin, is good for profitability but not growth."

Apple's profit for the quarter ended June 29 fell 22 percent as gross margins fell below 37 percent from more than 42 percent in the year-earlier quarter. Garcha estimated that Apple's share of the global smartphone market would fall to 15.5 percent this year and 13.1 percent next year, from 18.1 percent in 2012.

OVERSOLD?

Some analysts said Wednesday's selloff in Apple shares may have been overblown.

Nomura analyst Stuart Jeffrey said Apple may have ensured stable margins for the next couple of quarters by pricing the 5C in the United States at $99 with a contract and $549 without.

Saying the 5C was "nobody's low-margin phone," Cowen and Co analyst Timothy Arcuri noted that Apple's new relationship with Japan's NTT DoCoMo Inc plus the expected tie-up with China Mobile supported the view that Wall Street's estimates for Apple earnings in 2014 looked too low.

Arcuri said gross margins for the 5C appeared to be as high as in the mid-50 percent area.

Raymond James and Associates maintained its "strong buy" recommendation on the stock and raised its share price target to $675 from $600, based on expected demand for the lower-end iPhone, coupled with the NTT DoCoMo relationship and the preservation of gross margins.

Canaccord Genuity kept its "buy" rating on the stock and raised its target price to $550 from $530, citing Apple's aggressive launch plans in more than 100 countries by year-end.

The brokerage also raised its 2014 estimate for iPhone sales to 180 million units from 177 million.

Kenya's small-scale tea farmers see revenue increase, prices fall

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Revenue from tea produced by Kenya's small-scale farmers climbed 13 percent to 69 billion shillings in the year to June, the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) said on Monday, as it warned lower leaf prices could hurt tea earnings going forward.

Tea is a leading foreign exchange earner in east Africa's largest economy and members of KTDA account for about 60 percent of tea output in Kenya, the world's top exporter of black tea.

Small-scale farmers produced 1.1 billion kg of green leaf over the period compared to 970 million kg realised the previous year, KTDA said.

"This has resulted in KTDA managed factories earning higher revenue of 69 billion shillings, up from 61 billion shillings earned in 2011/12 financial year," KTDA said in a statement.

The rest of Kenya's tea is produced by large-scale farmers and corporations.

Lerionka Tiampati, managing director of KTDA, said the amount payable to farmers per kg of tea made would drop by about 10 percent in the 2012/13 financial year due to the high cost of production and a stronger shilling.

He said the average exchange rate in the past 12 months stood at 85 shillings to the dollar compared to the previous year's 89.16, negatively impacting total revenue.

"The small scale tea sub-sector in Kenya has not been spared from the global market dynamics, but the high volumes delivered mean that farmers will even out," Tiampati said.

Tiampati said the overall earnings for the Kenyan tea industry in 2013 could drop owing to depressed leaf prices since the start of the year.

"The new 2013/2014 financial year has started on a low note, with the sub-sector witnessing depressed earnings at the Mombasa Tea Auction. This seems to continue for the better part of the year and is likely to impact on the next earnings if the situation does not change," Tiampati said.

Tiampati added that the political crisis in Egypt, inefficiencies at the port of Mombasa, and uncertainty over Kenya's March 2013 general elections affected prices at the regional auction in Mombasa.

The Tea Board of Kenya, the regulator, said in June the east African producer expects to produce 410-415 million kg of tea in 2013, up from 369 million kg last year, helped by good weather.

Following revelations that the NSA may be compromising encryption standards, tech companies in the U.S. are on the defensive, answering the potential threat to their own reputations with expressions of outrage and a volley of petitions to publish more information about government requests.

Google filed a transparency petition on Monday seeking the ability to publish "detailed statistics" about information sought for U.S. foreign intelligence gathering. The company joins Facebook, Microsoft and Yahoo in doing so.

"Today?s motions from Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo ... press for the companies? right to publish the number of specific types of FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) requests that each company receives," said Kevin Bankston of the Center for Democracy & Technology.

"This is an important right for the companies to assert as they work to maintain their users' trust in the face of continuing revelations about the National Security Agency's surveillance of the Internet."

Meanwhile, Google, Facebook and others met Monday with a panel established by the White House to review the sweeping domestic surveillance exposed by Edward Snowden, a former contractor at the National Security Agency.?

The panel established by the White House, called The Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technology, was charged with recommending how to balance security and privacy concerns. President Barack Obama met with the new group on Aug. 27. It is to provide an interim report within two months.

Google is also closing some of its own data back doors in the wake of the NSA allegations, says?the Washington Post, which reported that, "Google is racing to encrypt the torrents of information that flow among its data centers."?

Separately, Google maintains that it "[does] not provide any government, including the U.S. government, with access to our systems. Also "As for recent reports that the U.S. government has found ways to circumvent our security systems, we have no evidence of any such thing ever occurring," a Google spokesperson said in a statement emailed to NBC News.?

On Friday,?Yahoo published the company's first transparency report, indicating that it had?received 12,444 data requests from the U.S. government relating to 40,322 accounts in the first six months of 2013.?

"We regularly push back against improper requests for user data, including fighting requests that are unclear, improper, overbroad or unlawful," Ron Bell, General Counsel, Yahoo,?wrote in a Tumblr post explaining the release.

Yahoo said the alleged snooping had "substantial potential for abuse" while Microsoft has "significant concerns" and "will be pressing the government for an explanation," according to?statements published by the Guardian on Saturday, and confirmed by NBC News.?

Facebook, which published its own transparency report on Aug. 27, also got into the fray, when the social network's general counsel published a letter describing the company's previous requests for more transparency.

On Monday morning, Facebook's Colin Stretch wrote that:?

... although we have been permitted to disclose a range of the total number of requests we have received and the number of users associated with those requests, we have not been permitted to specify even approximately how many of those requests may be national security-related, nor have we been permitted to provide information identifying the number of those requests that seek the content of users? accounts.

Facebook's latest global data request report showed that the U.S. government led the global call for data requests, asking for details of over 38,000 Facebook users in the first six months of 2013.

In a statement emailed to NBC News, a Facebook spokesperson wrote that: "We have not consulted with the NSA or any other government agency about the security features in our products, including encryption, and we never would do so. We continue to believe the reporting on this issue is misleading and inaccurate."?

Since the Guardian's first revelations that the NSA was engaged in high-tech snooping of U.S. civilians over domestic communication lines, trade organizations and tech companies have been requesting permission for more open disclosure of government requests for data, each wave of allegations followed by louder requests for transparency.?One comprehensive request dated July 18 this year by the Center for Democracy and Technology included signatures from Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo, Dropbox, Reddit, and many others.?

A post published Friday?on the IC On The Record, a Tumblr account hosted by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, dismissed the news of NSA's encryption cracking tactics as obvious and dangerous:?

Anything that yesterday?s disclosures add to the ongoing public debate is outweighed by the road map they give to our adversaries about the specific techniques we are using to try to intercept their communications in our attempts to keep America and our allies safe and to provide our leaders with the information they need to make difficult and critical national security decisions. ??
